Dear friends of the Global Food Summit,
Ladies and Gentlemen,
June was characterized by events in the food industry.
The DRV hosted Friedrich Merz,CDU, Minister Cem Özdemir spoke at the BITKOM Digital Farming Conference, and Gunther Beger, Director at UNIDO, opened the meeting at the Food Safety Congress of the HDE and Food Association.
All of them focused on the transformation of agriculture. UNIDO is committed to international standards. A meeting on this topic will be held in Vienna on June 27 and 28 to discuss how to deal with voluntary commitments. I will be there.
Bitkom sees the greatest challenge of the transformation as the standardization of data standards in order to be able to use the new technologies more effectively and efficiently. The goal of guaranteeing a network connection for every milk churn was once again called for here.
And the HDE is eagerly awaiting the European regulation CS3D and the Packaging Directive.
A lot is happening, and it remains to be hoped that the regulatory efforts are internationally competitive and that innovations are not slowed down by the codification of old standards and that the costs are not passed on to the manufacturers alone. The industry should speak with one voice along the supply chain. At the three conferences, it became clear that they should come even closer together here.

Q: How did you come up with the idea of bringing Indian snacks to Germany?
A: I'm originally from India and loved this snack as a child. When I moved to Germany in 2016, I noticed an exciting change on the supermarket shelves. There were no longer just potato crisps, but also snacks made from lentils, plantains, and a whole range of new, exciting snacks. I thought to myself: why not bring my favourite snacks from home to Germany?
I'm absolutely thrilled that so many people are curious and want to try something new. And that's how the "Water Lilly Pops" came onto the market. |

German Raiffeisen Day - "We need a new start of political cooperation" |

The hall was full, the mood was relaxed and the message was crystal clear: "We need a new start of political cooperation. With this federal government, you get the feeling that you are not wanted and not listened to".
The message was sent by Franz-Josef Holzenkamp, President of the German Raiffeisen Association, and received by Friedrich Merz, Chairman of the German CDU and leader of the opposition in the German Bundestag.
Around 300 managers from the organised cooperative agricultural and food sector came to the German Raiffeisen Day in Berlin last week. At the association's economic forum, they heard their president criticise and make clear demands of federal policy. |

Voluntary commitments by businesses are a valuable asset. They demonstrate the quality and strength of a competitive market, because they are a distinguishing feature for the customer as to which company offers more quality and sustainability.
The food industry in Germany is a leader in voluntary commitments and therefore also in quality promises. For example, the food industry's target agreements with the German government on sugar reduction will run until 2025, and the results are impressive.
The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) is now hosting the Vienna Dialogue on the benchmarking of voluntary certification programmes in the food sector on 27 and 28 June. These certifications play an important role in informing buyers and producers about better social and environmental outcomes in supply chains.
Leading representatives from companies, governments, international organizations and NGOs will spend two days in Vienna discussing effective cooperation and benchmarking practices.
UNIDO sees voluntary standards as an important instrument for integrating companies into global markets and value chains. The measures are intended to help small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in particular to prepare for the demands of the market in order to be internationally competitive and to integrate themselves into global value chains.

More cattle than Germany has inhabitants - but only a quarter of the CO2 footprint |

Over 300 million cattle are counted in India - making it an absolute giant in cattle farming on the global market. Surprisingly, however, the country has only a quarter of the CO2 footprint of Germany. High livestock numbers therefore do not necessarily have to be associated with high CO2 emissions.
To better understand the figures: There were around 87 million cattle in the USA on 1 January 24 and around 215 million in Brazil.
This makes India not only the largest cattle producer in the world, but also the second largest beef exporter - especially of buffalo meat. |

"The complexity of regulations, such as CSDDD, EUDR, CBAM, or the EU Packaging Directive, hinders emerging countries in the Global South from joining the EU market. The initial situation and interests of these countries are not sufficiently integrated into the regulations. As a result, small farmers in UNIDO's partner countries are excluded from global supply chains." With these words, Gunther Beger, Managing Director for Innovation and Economic Transformation at UNIDO, opened the 16th Food Safety Congress on 4 June 2024 in Berlin. |

"Our agriculture and food industry needs an update," explained Karin Guendel Gonzalez, Managing Director of Bayer CropScience Deutschland GmbH, in her introductory keynote speech at the Bitkom conference in Berlin. "On an ever smaller land area, more and more has to be produced - but low-yielding soils require a radical reorganisation towards regenerative agriculture," Guendel Gonzalez continued. Bitkom CEO Bernhard Rohleder added that the big challenge is, therefore, to create joint cloud concepts to make data accessible to everyone in a standardised way. Precision farming is only possible with data that can be easily processed on all systems - from satellites to digitally controlled agricultural machinery. There is still a need for coordination here. |
