Dear friends of the Global Food Summit,
On November 5, 2021, we will be at Berlin Science Week for the third year in a row. Our theme for this year's event is climate change - and what science can do to help achieve the 2030 climate goals. We are delighted not only to be collaborating with the Embassy of Peru, but especially to have the Peruvian Ambassador to Germany, H.E. Elmer Schialer Salcedo, personally deliver a short keynote on the topic of circular economy. We are also pleased that Bangladesh is on board again: Prof. Dr. Nehreen Majid from the University of Asia Pacific will present a paper on water treatment. The theme of sustainable cities and sustainability in food production will again be at the heart of the event, in line with our motto: "Foodtropolis: Urban.Circular.Food. & Climate Change." We are focusing on cell-cultured proteins (Clean Meat) as well as on the topic of water and wastewater in cities and are also pleased that our cooperation partner, the German Institute of Food Technologies (DIL), is once again on board for this and is providing two exciting speakers in the form of Dr. Sergiy Smetana and Dr. Volker Heinz.
What is more, here comes an outlook on 2022 - and please mark your calendars: The next Global Food Summit in Munich will take place on March 22 & 23, 2022 in the old congress hall on the Theresienhöhe. We firmly assume (as of now) that we will all be able to meet in person there again.
It is important to us, especially after the upcoming federal election, to continue giving food innovations a clear and scientifically-based voice. We also want to feed innovative impulses into the new government on how a transformation can be shaped. To this end, our events provide a platform where science, politics, companies and associations, as well as start-ups and the media, can meet to discuss topics focused on our future prospects in a professional and unbiased manner and create an environment that is open to progress. You initiated the Falling Walls Conference in 2009. What was your underlying motivation? 2009 was the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall and countless retrospective events were announced. I volunteered to support the Berlin Science Senator at the time and suggested they do a future-oriented event called "Falling Walls" with the guiding question "Which are the next walls to fall?". After that, it turned the event was entirely unprecedented with its three "i "s - international and interdisciplinary and intersectoral. In addition to that, it connects the very identity of Berlin and the peaceful fall of the Wall with global questions about the future. The response to it was so positive that we turned this unique event into an annual forum which is by now one of the most relevant scientific meetings worldwide.
The Global Food Summit is taking part at the Berlin Science Week - Save the Date!
We will be back at the Berlin Science Week with the following theme: "Foodtropolis: Urban.Circular.Food. & Climate Change", on November 5, 2021 from 9:00 am to 6:30 pm with talks about scientific issues from all over the world.
One of our most important questions for the future is: How can a bio-based, urban circular economy contribute to achieving the 2030 climate goals? What can cell-cultured meat or milk produced with microorganisms contribute to improving the urban carbon footprint? And, at what point can cities contribute to the energy transition through algae production? Or, converting our sanitation system in new developments to dry toilets to save water and thereby recover phosphate as a rare resource?
We will discuss these among with many other questions with our scientists and experts from around the world on November 5, 2021 at the Berlin Science Week in three sessions:
Session 1: "FARM2FORK - HOW CAN WE CLOSE THE NUTRIENT CYCLE". Session 2: "WATER AND CLIMATE - FUTURE WATER MANAGEMENT IN CITIES" and, Session 3: "A SCHNITZEL IS JUST A STRING OF MOLECULES".
We are especially pleased that the Peruvian Ambassador, H.E. Elmer Schialer Salcedo, will give the welcome address, and that the Peruvian Embassy is a supporter of our event this year.
REGION.innovativ - zirkulierBAR Intercommunal acceptance for sustainable value creation from sanitary by-product streams
We are pleased to announce that the agency mfm menschen für medien, who is co-organizer of the Global Food Summit, has become a member of the research consortium "zirkulierBAR", a project funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research.
Together with the Leibniz Institute and Kreiswerke Barnim, zirkulierBAR is building an innovative and scalable recycling plant for the closed-loop treatment of contents from dry toilets. The end product is a high-quality, health-safe, nutrient-rich recycled fertilizer for agriculture and horticulture. Municipalities can thus plan and build a water-saving and resource-conserving alternatives to linear, water-dependent treatment systems.
More than 30 municipalities and companies have already signed up as interested observers from across the country.

Peru: A Billboard Which Produces Drinking Water

Although Peru is considered one of the twenty most water-rich countries in the world, about seven to eight million Peruvians do not have access to clean drinking water. Researchers from the University of Mechanical Engineering and Technology in Lima (UTEC) and the Mayo Publicidad agency have succeeded in developing the first billboard that condenses moisture from the air to obtain 96 liters of clean drinking water every day.
Ying Wang (on the left) has been our new member at the Global Food Summit and mfm - menschen für medien since July 1, 2021. She specializes in agricultural innovation development, remote sensing and data analysis.
Ying holds a bachelor's degree in statistics and a master's degree in Sustainable Agriculture from the University of Padua. At mfm - menschen für medien and the Global Food Summit, she coordinates research collaborations as well as the Global Food Summit.
Farzana Mehrzabin (on the right) has been completing the team at mfm - menschen für medien and the Global Food Summit since September 1. She studied Earthquake Engineering in Bangladesh with a focus on Sustainable Urban Architecture. Farzana Mehrzabin has subsequently worked as a research associate at the University of Asia Pacific in Dhaka for several years. She also serves on the board of CEAD, the International Conference on Civil Engineering and Architectural Design. Farzana Mehrzabin is responsible for our science conferences and is in charge of our presence at the Berlin Science Week..
ICABR
From June 29 to July 2, 2021, Stephan Becker-Sonnenschein and Isabella Pfaff, Managing Director of mfm - menschen für medien were invited to the 25th Congress of the "International Consortium on Applied Bioeconomy Research" (ICABR) in Ravello.
The focus at the digital jubilee conference with more than 140 speakers and 200 participants, was on the topic "Contribution of the Bioeconomy to Sustainable Development", especially in view of the UN Food System Summit in September in New York.
In addition to that, our member of the Board of Trustees at the Global Food Summit, Prof. Dr. Justus Wesseler from Wageningen University in the Netherlands, was elected as the new President of ICABR. He succeeds Prof. Dr. Carl Pray from Rutgers University in the USA, who has led the consortium for more than a decade.

Meat alternatives are in high demand. So far, consumers can buy them mainly in the form of plant-based alternatives. Global Food Summit 2022: Save the Date
There will be another Global Food Summit in the Alte Kongresshalle on the Theresienhöhe in Munich on March 22 and 23, 2022. We are very pleased to have already received commitments from partners and sponsors who want to cooperate with us. Media Coverage Of The Summit 2021 - This Year's Media Response
This year, we are again pleased to have received numerous media reports in which the Global Food Summit and the topics of our conference were covered. We also received a visit from a camera team from Bayerischer Rundfunk which interviewed, among others, two speakers, Bernhardt Kowatsch from the "Innovation Accelerator" at the World Food Programme (WFP) the United Nations (UN), founded in 2015, and Dr. Pasi Vainikka from Solar Foods, as well as our Head and Founder Stephan Becker-Sonnenschein. In total, these media stories reached 10.9 million people, and our social media channels reached an additional 315,000, approximately.
